OFFICIAL VOTING INFORMATION FOR NELSON COUNTY

The Constitution of Virginia requires that you be registered in the precinct in which you live in order to be qualified to vote.

For the convenience of the citizens of Nelson County, the Voter Registration Office in the basement of the Health Department Building in Lovingston will be open each Monday – Friday between the hours 0f 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

In order to be eligible to vote in the General Election on November 2, 2010, you must register by 5:00 PM on October 12, 2010.

The Voter Registration Office will be open on Saturday,October 23 and 30, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM for the purpose of voting by absentee ballot. Saturday, October 30, 2010 is the last day that an absentee ballot may be cast.

For all elections, registered voters will be required by law to show identification. Any of the following forms of ID will be acceptable:  Virginia Voter ID Card, Virginia Driver’s License, Military ID, Any Federal, State or Government ID, Employer Photo ID or Social Security Card.

As required by 24.2-428.2 of the Code of Virginia, the County of Nelson has removed from the list of registered voters, any person who did not take action in response to an official request of confirmation of their address within the time allowed by law. A list of persons who have been removed is Posted at the Courthouse in the Clerk of Court Office. FAQs
How do I register to vote? Deadline for Voter Registration is 22 prior to election day.  For mail registration, postmarks are acceptable before the 22 days. Register to vote by downloading forms from the State Board of Elections website, call registrar for forms or go into a DMV office.

I have been convicted of a felony; how do I get my voting rights restored? If you’ve been convicted of a felony, you can’t register to vote unless your civil rights have been restored by the Governor or other appropriate authority.  For assistance in having your voting rights restored, contact the Clemency Representative with the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth at 804-786-2441

If your voting rights have been taken away by a court through a mental competency proceeding, those rights may be restored by the court.

I’m in college, out of town working, have poor health, how do I get an absentee ballot?
Contact the Voter Registrar’s office to request an absentee ballot application be sent to you or download an application from the website at:  www.sbe.state.virginia.gov

What precinct do I vote in? The county is divided into 5 voting districts.  Call the Registrar’s office if you are unfamiliar or unsure of where to go vote.  You will also find this information on your Virginia’s Voter Registration Card issued to you when you registered to vote

Where are the polling places in the County:
Each district has their own polling place or places.  The following is a list of current polling places and addresses.  Please refer to the county precinct map, voter card, or call the Registrar’s office for correct polling place in your appropriate district.

All polling place locations open at 6:00AM and close at 7:00PM each election.

How do I place a referendum on the ballot?
You will need at least 5% of the total Registered voters signatures on petitions of the county in order to have an issue placed on the ballot.  You should contact a lawyer to help you word your petitions correctly and file them with the Clerk of Circuit Court.  For more information contact the State Board of Elections at 1-800-552-9745 or at   http://www.sbe.virginia.gov

How can I become an officer of election?
