Montebello Nature Trail Dedication-April 28

Along the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Nelson County is the village of Montebello. It is the home of the trout rearing station know as the Montebello Fish Hatchery. On Wednesday April 28, 2010, the hatchery will officially open the Montebello Nature Trail. The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony at 2:00 pm. The trail is a cooperative effort between the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries and Friends of the Montebello Fish Hatchery. The fish culture station has always been a popular site for appreciating nature. In 2005 it was designated as a birding site on the Jefferson Loop of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail. The Nature Trail will expand the opportunity to view wildlife and native trees and plants. Friend of the Montebello Fish Hatchery have been involved in protecting and promoting the fish culture station since 2001. For this project they offered their service to DGIF through the Complementary Work Force program. More than 250 volunteer hours were involved in construction of the trail.
