First Saturday Community Market at Rockfish Valley Community Center will be held from 9 am to noon.  The market features a wide variety of seasonal vegetables, beef, chicken, pork, eggs, artisanal cheeses, yogurt & butter plus fresh baked goods, jams & jellies, seasonal plants, local arts & crafts and musical entertainment.  A delicious pancake breakfast can be purchased from 8:30 to 10:30am. 190 Rockfish School Lane, Afton. 434-361-1725

Wintergreen Nature Foundation and Nelson County Historical Society  present Cradle for Democracy-the Jefferson Years.  7:00 pm at the Nelson County High School Auditorium. The first one (Acts I and II) will focus on the treaty and debates over the purchase of Louisiana, commingled with scenes that are taking place in Nelson County. That play will close with actors in costume rising within the audience (the Senate) and debating the constitutionality of the purchase, before the Senate Chairman who was Vice President Aaron Burr. Acts III and IV will start with Jefferson showing Meriwether Lewis how to accomplish celestial navigation in the midst of the audience (Hopefully with the stars displayed in a darkened auditorium on a screen) with a latitude hook and a sextant. It will be followed by scenes of Lewis and Clark on the upper Missouri with slides of the actual locations as props. Again, scenes from local history will be interspersed with the national scene. This will include William Cabell as governor during the trial of Aaron Burr which occurred in Richmond. (Yes, he who was Vice President and Chair of the Senate in the second act, is tried for treason in the fourth act…historically correct) The second play (Acts III, IV) will end with Nelson becoming a county.  434-325-8169
