What you need to know

Influenza Update:
Two new cases of H1N1 flu were confirmed in Virginia, bringing the total of confirmed
cases in VA to 21. With a dozen schools in New York City closed because of the swine flu
outbreak, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said that the flu is spreading rapidly in
the city and that officials will focus on minimizing its seriousness. As of
1100, 18 May, the Centers for Disease Control reported 5,123 confirmed and
probable cases in 48 states including DC. The World Health Organization
reported that 40 countries have officially reported 9830 cases of influenza A
(H1N1) infection, including 79 deaths. Confirmed swine flu cases in Japan
suddenly exploded to over 100 on 17 May and the government shut schools and
canceled community events as the disease continued to spread unpredictably
worldwide.

Pandemic Flu ñ What is it and should I be concerned?

A pandemic is a world-wide disease outbreak. A flu pandemic occurs when a new flu (influenza A) virus appears for which people have little or no immunity, and for which there is no vaccine. This respiratory disease spreads easily from person-to-person by coughing and sneezing. It causes serious illness.

Pandemic flu is different from the flu; people usually get in the fall and winter months. With seasonal flu moist people have some immunity, and a vaccine is available.

Pandemic flu could affect your normal day-to-day life. Businesses, stores and other services may need to limit their normal hours. Schools and child care may need to close.

You can prepare for pandemic flu now:

ï Store a two-week supply of water and food.
ï Ask your doctor to prescribe an extra supple of your regular prescription drugs.
ï Keep a supply of over-the-counter medicines (pain relievers, stomach remedies, cough and cold medicines) that you might need.
ï Wash your hands often and teach your children.
ï Cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze. Teach your children too. Wash hands after you throw away any tissues.
ï Stay home if youíre sick.
ï Keep sick children home from school and child care.
ï Talk with family members, loved ones, and neighbors about what to do if they get sick.
