Devils Backbone Mountain Cross
Start and finish at the Devils Backbone Brewing Company and ride the back
roads of the Blue Ridge Mountains in scenic Nelson County Virginia!
A Metric century (65mi) that follows some of the most quiet and beautiful
mountain roads in the mid-Atlantic region. Choose any type of bike (road,
cross or mtb) to tackle these challenging paved and unpaved mountain
roads. This is a very unique biking experience. You will follow mountain
streams to high ascents with cool temperatures. You will also plunge
down descents for miles and miles!

Any bike will do. A Cyclocross bike is the best tool for the job. However,
a road bike will also work, but mount up some puncture resistant tires!
Mountain bikes would be comfortable, especially on the dirt road descents.
Whatever bike you choose make sure you have some low gears for the 6600
ft. of elevation gain and some 15+% grades!

Your $45  registration includes:

- 2 food and drink rest stops during the ride

- a free T-Shirt

- a $5 voucher for a post ride meal at the Brewing Co.

- post-ride live music at the Brewing Co.

Registration will increase by $10 after 11pm on Aug. 26th

Registration will be available the day of the event for an additional
$10

The manager of the Devils Backbone Brewing Company (Chris Trotter) has
offered up his land 4 miles from Brewery for Primitive Camping. $15/site
will cover both Friday and Saturday nights and there are a total of
20 sites. Depending on the crowd, he may throw in a keg of beer and
music. His address for google mapping is 3519 Rockfish Valley Hwy zip
is 22958. Call him at (434) 361-1001

The first 10 Men and the first 10 Women finishers will get a GIFT from
the Brewing Company!

BIKE CHOICE:

The route is almost exactly 50% paved and 50% gravel/packed dirt. The
unpaved sections range from loose gravel/ dirt to hard pack surface.
There are 3 unpaved descents. One is eight miles long!

A Cross bike is the best tool because of the bigger tires and lower
gears.

If a Cross Bike is not an option:

If you are going for speed (especially on the climbs) and not concerned
about comfort then mount up the fattest tires that will fit on your
road bike. Using robust tires and tubes will decrese the chance of flatting.
Light road racing tires would not be smart! Also it would be best that
your road bike has a compact crank and a 27 or 28 cog in the back. There
are some pretty steep unpaved sections so small gears are a must for
seated climbing in order to maintain traction with a road bike.

If you want comfort, fun (especially on the descents) and plenty of
gears for climbing then a MTB would be the way to go. If you do choose
a MTB then a less aggressive/smaller tire choice would be best.
