Directions: From Lovingston, go south on U.S. 29 for approximately 8 miles. Turn east (left) on Morse Lane (VSH 748). Go 1 mile to end of road. Transfer Station is adjacent to the old landfill that closed in 1993. The County Animal Control Shelter is also located here.

Hours of Operation
Monday through Friday: 8 am until 3:30 pm
Saturday: 8 am until 11:45 am
Sunday: closed

Other closings include New Year’s Day, Lee-Jackson Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Call for hours during these holiday periods. The facility may also be closed when snow and ice create unsafe conditions. During inclement weather, call the facility to check on operational status.

Tipping Fees
Commercial and residential trash is accepted during operating hours.
A tipping fee of $55/ton is charged for commercial trash (scales measure in 20 pound increments). Call for current rates on tires.

Staffed Collection Centers with Recycling & Garbage Service

All staffed centers are open 6 days a week, 7 am until 7 pm. They are closed on Mondays. They are also closed January 1, July 4, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Sites may be closed on short notice on days when snow or ice create unsafe conditions, or during local power outages.

Use of County facilities is limited to persons who either reside in Nelson County or who own real estate property in the County. Visitors to all staffed centers must display a County decal. Call 434-263-7098 for information about the centers, and 263-7003 to inquire about obtaining a decal.

Re-Use Shed
Except for Wintergarden, all of the above sites have a Re-Use Shed for the exchange of free items.  At the staffed sites, please speak with an attendant before leaving items in the shed.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and Electronic Waste
Four HHW days a year are scheduled at the Region 2000 Landfill in Lynchburg.  The dates are always the second Saturday in April, June, August, and October.  Electronics are also accepted for recycling at these events.  Hours are 8am to noon.  Participation is free for Nelson residents and land-owners who obtain a voucher from the Nelson Solid Waste & Recycling office.  Driving instructions to the landfill and complete information on acceptable items are printed on the voucher forms.  An HHW event is also held at the Ivy Materials Utilization Center in Albemarle every spring and sometimes fall.  The dates for the events in Ivy change from year to year.  In 2012, the date will be April 14, from 9am to 2pm.

Commercial Hazardous Waste Collection
Businesses with hazardous waste may participate in a commercial collection held at the Ivy Materials Utilization Center in Albemarle on April 13, 2012.  To participate, a business must not generate 1) more than 100 kilograms (220 pounds) hazardous waste in a month; 2) more than 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) acutely hazardous waste in a month; and 3) store not more than 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) hazardous waste. To participate in this event, businesses must pre-register with MXI Environmental, Inc. Disposal cost will be determined on an individual basis.
