You wouldn’t immediately think of a ski resort as a place for summer fun. However, epic green mountain views and amenities close to the sky make Wintergreen a wonderful warm-weather destination. If you are looking for a relaxing evening, Wintergreen Performing Arts offers classical and popular music concerts during the summer months. If excitement is what you’re looking for, take the family to the Discovery Ridge Adventure Center. Activities at Discovery Ridge include ziplining, climbing, bungee trampoline, mini-golf, and a campfire facility that offers s’mores kits. Wintergreen’s nationally recognized children’s programs include outdoor movies, workshops, bingo games, and storytelling.
Some folks can’t imagine a summer without a day of catching or observing fish, and the Wintergreen area offers these options, too. Fly fishing in a catch and release area is available at Stoney Creek within the boundaries of the Wintergreen. Brook, Brown, and Rainbow trout mature at the Montebello State Fish Hatchery before being released to stock trout waters. Fish food is available for kids to toss to the eager fish.
A summer day at the lake is a wonderful way to enjoy Nelson County. Swimming at Lake Monocan at Stoney Creek is available Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Members of Wintergreen Resort and guests at the resort have complimentary access to the park, and the public may attend 10am-6pm, Sunday-Friday, for a fee. Canoes, paddle boats, and kayak rentals are available by the hour.
If you’re looking for a unique craft brewery experience, stop by Devils Backbone Brewing Company. If over a dozen taps and an extensive pub menu aren’t enough, remember you can bring the family pet as long as he or she stays leashed in the designated pet area. Devils Backbone also offers campsites near the restaurant. The Devils Backbone Campground includes primitive tent sites and full RV hookup sites. A 24/7 bath house is on-site.
